KIDS 101/ADULTS 101 – ENGAGED GUARDS

Each game consists of a three minute round, a one minute break, and then another three minute round with the position of the players switched.

Top Player:

  • Position: Standing with your partner underneath you and connected to one or both of your legs.
  • Objective: Focus on breaking your partner’s connections to your body and staying on your feet.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Successfully disengage from your partner.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: Underneath your partner connected to one or both of their legs.
  • Objective: Focus on connecting to your partner’s legs and hips in ways that make them carry your weight and limits their movement.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: None

Bottom Player:

  • Position: On the ground with your knees and either hands or elbows on the mat. Your partner should be on kneeling next to you with one hand across your back and control of one of your arms.
  • Objective: Focus on standing or getting your legs between you and your partner.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Either stand up or transition to a position where your legs are between you and your partner.

Reset if either player wins.


Top Player:

  • Position: Kneeling next to your partner with control of one of the points where their body touches the mat.
  • Objective: Focus on breaking your partner down and getting their hips or shoulders to the mat.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Partner’s hips or shoulders are touching the mat and you have chest to chest or chest to back contact with your hands connected.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: On the ground with your knees and either hands or elbows on the mat. Your partner should be kneeling next to you with control of one of the points where your body is touching the mat.
  • Objective: Focus on standing or getting your legs between you and your partner.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Either stand up or transition to a position where your legs are between you and your partner.

Reset if either player wins.


6 Minute Round: Live round with a partner. Start standing if you are able to do so safely. Otherwise pick the starting position from one of the previous games and start there. Roll to submission, reset, and continue. Repeat as many times as possible before the round ends.

COMP CLASS/ADULTS 201 – SEATED GUARD

Game 2: Causing Posts

Bottom Player:

  • Position: Seated on your butt with our feet between your partner’s knees.
  • Objective: Maintain seated open guard, keep your feet between your partner’s knees, and your head/hands pointed at the top player. Make connections between the top player’s elbows or make connection to the outside of top player’s elbows. Attempt to make your opponent post, and then connect to the shoulder line with underhooks and connect your hands.

Attacking Player:

  • Position: Standing in front of your partner with one of their ankles or shins connected to one of your legs and one hand connected to your legs.

  • Position: Seated in front of your partner with one of your shins or ankles connected to one of their legs and one hand connected to their legs.
  • Objective: Create meaningful connections to your partner’s legs using your legs, hands, and arms. If you are able to gain control retain it for as long as possible.
  • Constraints: Do not sweep your opponent.
  • Win Condition: None

Game 5: Control a  Leg

Attacking Player:

  • Position: Standing in front of your partner with one of their ankles or shins connected to one of your legs and one hand connected to your legs.
  • Objective: Focus on breaking your partner’s connections to your body, and progress past their knees to their thighs. Remain there as long as possible.
  • Constraints: Do not proceed past the thighs.
  • Win Condition: None

Defending Player:

  • Position: Seated in front of your partner with one of your shins or ankles connected to one of their legs and one hand connected to their legs.
  • Objective: Create meaningful connections to your partner’s legs using your legs, hands, and arms. Use those connections to destabilize your partner to their hands or hips. If they go to their hands hold them there for as long as possible.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: None

Game 6: Destabilization

Attacking Player:

  • Position: Standing in front of your partner with one of their ankles or shins connected to one of your legs and one hand connected to your legs.
  • Objective: Flatten your partner to the mat.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Create chest to chest or chest to back contact.

Defending Player:

  • Position: Seated in front of your partner with one of your shins or ankles connected to one of their legs and one hand connected to their legs.
  • Objective: Create meaningful connections to your partner’s legs using your legs, hands, and arms. Use those connections to destabilize your partner, bring them to the mat, and create chest to chest or chest to back contact.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Transition to a position where your legs are connected to one or both of your partner’s legs.

Game 7: Punishing Posts

Top Player:

  • Position: On your knees in front of your training partner with your partner’s feet inside your knees.
  • Objective: Break your partner’s connections to your body and pin them to their back.
  • Constraints: None

Bottom Player:

  • Position: Seated on your butt with our feet between your partner’s knees.
  • Objective: Work to connect to your partner using your hands and feet. Attempt to make your partner post, and when they do keep their hand(s) on the mat for as long as possible.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: None

ADULTS 201/KIDS 201 – STRAIGHT ANKLE LOCK

Each game consists of a three minute round, a one minute break, and then another three minute round with the position of the players switched.

PRE-GAME WORK: DRILL THE STRAIGHT ANKLE LOCK! WORK ON THE BREAKING MECHANICS!

This game should only be played enough rounds for each player to get a feel for finishing the submission and for feeling the submission mechanics being applied.

Attacking Player:

  • Position: Seated with your partner in ashi garami with an overhook/wrap on your opponent’s captured leg.
  • Objective: Slowly apply the finishing mechanics of the straight ankle lock.
  • Constraints: Move as slowly as possible while applying pressure to the ankle.
  • Win Condition: Your partner taps.

Defending Player:

  • Position: Inside your partner’s ashi garami with an overhook/wrap on your captured leg.
  • Objective: Tap early as your partner slowly applies finishing mechanics for the straight ankle lock.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: None

Attacking Player:

  • Position: Seated with your partner in ashi garami with an overhook/wrap on your opponent’s captured leg.
  • Objective: Maintain control of your opponent’s foot and leg.
  • Constraints: No finishing, submission attempts, and no exposing the heel. No finishing or submission attempts. If the position feels unsafe at any time completely release the foot and leg.
  • Win Condition: None

Defending Player:

  • Position: Inside your partner’s ashi garami with an overhook/wrap on your captured leg.
  • Objective: Keep your heel hidden by pressing it into their ribs and find a way to free the trapped leg.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Your leg is freed.

Attacking Player:

  • Position: Seated with your partner in ashi garami with your outside elbow on the ground and their leg between your arm and torso.
  • Objective: Gain control of the foot/ankle by securing it in your armpit. Maintain control for as long as possible.
  • Constraints: No finishing or submission attempts.
  • Win Condition: None

Defending Player:

  • Position: Inside your partner’s ashi garami with your foot between their elbow and torso.
  • Objective: Prevent your foot from being captured in their armpit and free your leg.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Your leg is freed.

  • Position: Kneeling next to your partner with one hand across their back and control of one of their arms.

  • Objective: Use movement to create space and improve your position.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Turn and face your partner by any means necessary.

  • Objective: Break your partner’s grips and control of your upper body in order to gain upright posture.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: On your back with your legs wrapped around your partner’s torso with your feet hooked together behind them.
  • Objective: Create meaningful connection with your partner and use it to control their posture. Do not let them gain an upright posture.

Game 2: Open the Feet

Top Player:

  • Position: On your side with your hips connected to your partner’s shoulder outside of their arms and with your legs wrapped around their torso.
  • Objective: Focus on maintaining your connection to your partner and using it to transition to chest to back contact.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: You achieve chest to back contact and maintain it for three seconds.

  • Objective: Get your elbows back in towards your body or revers the position.

  • Win Condition: Get both elbows back inside or make your partner fall over.

  • Position: Start in S-Mount with arm elbow to elbow with bottom player.
  • Objective: Maintain your structure and hold your partner down as they move underneath you.
  • Constraints: Do not separate your partner’s hands or finish the submission.
  • Win Condition: None

Bottom Player:

  • Position: Start in bottom S-Mount with top players arm elbow to elbow and bottom players arms crossed..
  • Objective: Resist your partner’s attempts to hold you down and free the arm from danger.
  • Win Condition: You free your arm or are able to get your back off of the mat.

Top Player:

  • Position: Start in S-Mount with arm elbow to elbow with bottom player.
  • Objective: Maintain your structure and hold your partner down as they move underneath you.
  • Constraints: None.
  • Win Condition: Finish the arm bar.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: Start in bottom S-Mount with top players arm elbow to elbow and bottom players arms crossed..
  • Objective: Resist your partner’s attempts to hold you down and free the arm from danger.
  • Win Condition: You free your arm or are able to get your back off of the mat.

Each game consists of a three minute round, a one minute break, and then another three minute round with the position of the players switched.

Game 1:Under Hook Control

Top Player:

  • Position: Top of half guard with double underhooks and chest to chest contact on your partner.
  • Objective: Hold bottom player down with chest to chest contact and underhooks.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Pass the half guard by using the free leg to free the trapped leg.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: Bottom of half guard with your partner having double underhooks and chest to chest contact.
  • Objective: Free yourself from double underhooks
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Under hooks removed.

Reset if either player wins.


Game 2: Single Under Hook Control

Top Player:

  • Position: Top of half guard with one underhook and chest to chest contact on your partner.
  • Objective: Hold bottom player down chest to chest with contact. Search for double underhooks.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Double underhooks established.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: Bottom of half guard with your opponent having one underhook and chest to chest contact. You have a frame on the head arm.
  • Objective: Use movement to create space and improve your position.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Achieve knee shield or inside hook.

Reset if either player wins.


Game 3: Hip Access

Top Player:

  • Position: Top of your partner who is on their side. You have access to their hips.
  • Objective: Flatten your opponent to their back, create chest to chest contact, and establish underhooks
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Free your trapped leg.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: On your side with your partner having access to your hips.
  • Objective: Use movement to create space and improve your position.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Establish the knee shield or inside hook.

Reset if either player wins.


Game 4: Maintaining the Knee Shield

Top Player:

  • Position: On your knees with your partner’s bottom leg between yours and your chest pressing against the knee of their top leg. Their hands should be connected to your body in any configuration they want.
  • Objective: Remove the knee shield.
  • Constraints: You can alleviate pressure to manipulate the frame, but cannot flee the engagement.
  • Win Condition: The knee shield is no longer between you and your partner.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: On one side with your bottom leg inside your partner’s knees, your top knee should be touching their upperbody, and your hands/arms should be touching their body in any configuration you’d like.
  • Objective: Keep your top knee between you and your partner. Do not allow them to remove it.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: None

Game 5: Punishing Posts

Top Player:

  • Position: On your knees with your partner’s bottom leg between yours and your chest pressing against the knee of their top leg. Their hands should be connected to your body in any configuration they want.
  • Objective: Remove the knee shield.
  • Constraints: You can alleviate pressure to manipulate the frame, but cannot flee the engagement.
  • Win Condition: The knee shield is no longer between you and your partner.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: On one side with your bottom leg inside your partner’s knees, your top knee should be touching their upperbody, and your hands/arms should be touching their body in any configuration you’d like.
  • Objective: Force your partner’s hands to touch the mat, and then punish the post by connecting your hips to their shoulderline or establishing a two-on-one grip.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Hips are connected to your partner’s shoulders or a two on one grip has been established.

  • Position: On your knees with your partner’s bottom leg between yours and your chest pressing against the knee of their top leg. Their hands should be connected to your body in any configuration they want.
  • Objective: Remove the knee shield.
  • Constraints: You can alleviate pressure to manipulate the frame, but cannot flee the engagement.
  • Win Condition: The knee shield is no longer between you and your partner.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: On one side with your bottom leg inside your partner’s knees, your top knee should be touching their upperbody, and your hands/arms should be touching their body in any configuration you’d like.
  • Objective: Force your partner’s hands to the mat as many times as possible.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: If you get your partner’s hands to the mat hold them there for as long as possible.

Game 7: Ball of Yarn

Top Player:

  • Position: On your knees with your partner’s bottom leg between yours and your chest pressing against the knee of their top leg. Their hands should be connected to your body in any configuration they want.
  • Objective: Achieve chest to chest contact.
  • Constraints: You can alleviate pressure to manipulate the frame, but cannot flee the engagement.
  • Win Condition: The knee shield is no longer between you and your partner.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: On one side with your bottom leg inside your partner’s knees, your top knee should be touching their upperbody, and your hands/arms should be touching their body in any configuration you’d like.
  • Objective: Prevent your partner from achieving chest to chest contact using your legs and hands. Allow them to touch the ground as little as possible.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Lift your partner completely off the ground.

ADULTS 201/KIDS 201 – FRONT HEAD LOCK

Each game consists of a three minute round, a one minute break, and then another three minute round with the position of the players switched.

Top Player:

  • Position: Connected with one hand on the chin and one hand on the elbow.
  • Objective: Continuously try to keep your partner’s hands on the mat and continuously cover their head.
  • Constraints: No submissions allowed.
  • Win Condition: None

Bottom Player:

  • Position: On your hands and knees with your partner covering your head with one hand on your chin and one hand on your elbow.
  • Objective: Try to relieve yourself from the situation by freeing your head.
  • Constraints: None.
  • Win Condition: Free your head.

Reset if bottom player wins.


Top Player:

  • Win Condition: Return to a standing position, seated position, or bring your knees or feet between you and your partner.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: On your side with your hips connected to your partner’s shoulder outside of their arms and with your legs wrapped around their torso.
  • Objective: Focus on maintaining your connection to your partner and using it to transition to chest to back contact.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: You achieve chest to back contact and maintain it for three seconds.

COMP CLASS/ADULTS 101 – SUPINE GUARD (OPEN GUARD)

Each game consists of a three minute round, a one minute break, and then another three minute round with the position of the players switched.

  • Position: Standing disconnected from your partner near their feet.
  • Objective: Use hands to keep your partner’s connections broken and your feet free.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: Lying on your back with your knees retracted to your chest and elbows in near your knees.

Game 3: Open Guard Sweeping

Top Player:

  • Position: Standing disconnected from your partner near their feet.
  • Objective: Clear the line of the feet and advance to the line of the knees either outside or inside your partner’s legs. Hold this position for as long as possible.
  • Constraints: Stay as close to your partner as possible.
  • Win Condition: None

Bottom Player:

  • Position: Lying on your back with your knees retracted to your chest and elbows in near your knees.
  • Objective: Make and maintain connections to inside position using your hands and feet and then use those connections to destabilize your partner.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Off balance your partner forcing them either onto their hands or their butt. If they land on their butt immediately reset and continue. If they land on their hands hold them in that position for as long as you can.

  • Objective: Create space and movement in order to allow improvement of your position.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: On your back with your partner on top of you lying perpendicular to your torso with chest to chest contact.
  • Objective: Focus on breaking the chest to chest connection using movement and framing.

Game 3: Maintain Scarf Hold

Top Player:

  • Position: Lying with your side on your partner’s chest and facing their head. Your near arm should be wrapped around their head and grasping your own thigh. Your partner’s inside arm should be on your torso and controlled by your free hand.
  • Objective: Maintain this position for as long as possible
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: None

Bottom Player:

  • Position: Underneath your partner with their side on your chest, their near arm wrapped behind your head grasping their own thigh, and your inside arm on their torso.
  • Objective: Focus on using movement, framing, and connecting your hands to your own body to either free your head or reverse the position.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Free yourself or reverse the position.

Game 4: Transition to Mount

Top Player:

  • Position: On top of your partner with chest to chest contact lying perpendicular to their torso.
  • Objective: Focus on keeping your partner flattened to the mat by maintaining pressure through your chest to chest connection.

  • Win Condition: Get one leg to the other side of your partner’s body so that you are straddling their torso.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: On your back with your partner on top of you lying perpendicular to your torso with chest to chest contact.

  • Win Condition: Bring your feet or knees between you and your partner or reverse the position.

Top Player:

  • Position: Sitting on top of your partner straddling their torso.
  • Objective: Trap your partner’s wrist to the floor either on the same side or the cross side of their head.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: On your back with your opponent straddling your torso.
  • Objective: Keep your hands pointed at your partner’s hips. If your wrist is pinned continuosly fight out.

Game 6: Elbow Exposure Extension /Contraction

Top Player:

  • Position: Sitting on top of your partner straddling their torso.
  • Objective: Trap your partner’s wrist to the floor either on the same side or the cross side of their head to expose the elbows. Once the elbows are exposed extend the elbows away from the centerline towards the head or in towards the centerline by any means neccessary
  • Constraints: No submissions – only wrist pinning allowed.
  • Win Condition: Partner’s elbows are exposed and extended or contracted.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: On your back with your opponent straddling your torso.
  • Objective: Keep your hands pointed at your partner’s hips, work to destabilize your partner, and bring your knees back in front.
  • Constraints: None
  • Win Condition: Knees are brought back in front of your partner.

Game 7: Transitioning to Shoulder Line

Top Player:

  • Position: Sitting on top of your partner straddling their torso.
  • Objective: Trap your partner’s wrist to the floor either on the same side or the cross side of their head to expose the elbows. Once the elbows are exposed extend the elbows away from the centerline towards the head or in towards the centerline by any means neccessary. Slide up and turn to face the shoulder line while trapping it between your knee and foot.
  • Constraints: No submissions – only wrist pinning allowed.
  • Win Condition: Partner’s elbows are exposed and extended or contracted.

Bottom Player:

  • Position: On your back with your opponent straddling your torso.
  • Objective: Keep your hands pointed at your partner’s hips, work to destabilize your partner, and bring your knees back in front.

  • Win Condition: Knees are brought back in front of your partner.

  • Constraints: Increase pressure as slowly as possible.
